Église Saint-Pantaléon

The Saint-Pantaléon church of Chavagnac displays some very interesting altarpieces that date back to the XVI th century. We visited this church during the Christmas fair, the church being open and used as a venue.The church was restored between 1998 and 2011. Most remarkable was the discovery of the altarpieces that had closely escaped the revolution and had been painted over. When the paint was removed the original colors reappeared and were restored. The largest piece is a wood caving, sculpted in low relief and colorfully painted, measuring 5 by 4 meters.Depicting the crucifixion, saints and decorated with plant and bird designs. It is said Saint Pantaléon (whom the church is dedicated to) is represented three times (twice as a martyr). Now classified as a historical object, and protected as such, under French law. The colorfulness is an striking reminder of the original ornamentation of medieval churches.

Petit bijou de sculpture sur bois avec de superbes sculptures (découvert grâce à une route annexe) ça en vaut le détour !

Église merveilleusement bien restaurée a côté de sa tour qui la garde !
