My sister and I will be visiting this chapel later this year. Our uncle, U.S. Army Air Corps. Capt. Glenn Maltby, piloted the B-25 bomber that crashed under extreme conditions on 11 September 1944.In heavy fog, flying on only one of two engines while attempting an emergency landing at Loyettes Airfield, my uncle was unable to see the landing field and chose to circle around to try to land a second time. (The navigation maps they had of the area showed the area as being flat.). This was part of the first big push by Allied Forces to liberate France following D-Day at Normandy Beach. The Germans had left Loyettes Airfield only two days earlier, and none of the American pilots had flown in the area prior to 11 September.Flying with virtually no visibility, Capt. Maltby apparently pulled up at the last moment to avoid a rocky outcropping on the mountain below the chapel. The plane soared up, and one wing clipped the chapel’s roof and then tumbled into the field beyond. We are very much looking forward to paying our respects to all those lost, and to meeting and personally thanking the chapel association for their ongoing work in preserving the memory of the sacrifices made by the Allied Forced during World War II. Every other year a commemoration is held at the chapel. After all these years, they will never forget. We love France for so many reasons. I am grateful that this chapel still remains and is so lovingly cared for, and that, after nearly 80 years, we will have the opportunity to visit, to sit inside in prayerful contemplation, to look upon the photos of our uncle and 1st Lt. Peter Whelan, which are placed to the right of the altar.I discovered much of this information in only the past eight years. I was astonished by everything I learned. Most astonishing of all, to me, was the fact that services of remembrance are still being held to this day. My family is incredibly grateful.I only wish our mother had lived long enough to learn of the loving respect and gratitude that continues to be paid to her little brother for his ultimate sacrifice.Thank you, people of France.
