This is an exquisite small museum created in the shadow of Caux’s magnificent church. The contents show the story of this village from pre-history to Roman times to the present (although with nothing concerning the Occupation - a subject evidently too sensitive, even more than 70 years later). Exhibits include pottery, tools, and costumes, with an obvious focus on Caux’s importance as a producer of wine. Many of Caux’s more celebrated personalities are memorialised including the notorious Jean Pomèredes, the notorious highwayman, who was eventually caught and guillotined in 1842, a spectacle that reputedly attracted 50,000 spectators, who came from Montpellier and beyond to enjoy the entertainment. The museum is curated to a very high standard indeed and can be enjoyed best in conjunction with a stroll through the old centre which contains numerous medieval buildings and remnants of ancient ramparts.
