Ooh la la! France Wedding Planner
Hiring Rachel Kaplan as a wedding planner was the biggest mistake I made in the whole wedding planning process. In my initial call with her, I questioned her low fee but she said that she had scaled it to the size of my event (which was very small, 14 people). She was not up front about the fact that she builds additional fees (30%) into vendor contracts. This was not stated in our contract with her, and she later defended it as “industry standard”.Rachel was extremely difficult to work with. Our Zoom calls were mainly her just talking in circles. She visited the Shangri-La and the Ritz venues, and even though I expressed that I wanted to have my wedding at the Ritz she aggressively tried to convince me to have it at the Shangri-La. When I sent some recommendations of photographers I liked, she sent a very threatening email saying that doing my own research was somehow a breach of contract, when I was just trying to show her what I liked. She recommended some photographers with bad portfolios, and I ended up choosing a photographer that had been on my list. She signed the contract directly with the photographer, then had me sign a photography contract on her letterhead with a higher amount, so she could keep the difference. She did not disclose this practice up-front, and was unwilling to show us any contract from the vendor. I began to feel very uncomfortable with the process because she was stressful to work with and I just wanted to understand how much we were actually paying her. I reached out to some friends who had recently worked with wedding planners and they all advised me that this situation was sketchy; in no way was it “industry standard.”When I asked Rachel about extra fees, she completely lost it. She sent another email threatening me about breaches of contract. My fiancé and I called her to try to have a conversation and understand the issue. She spent over 20 minutes yelling at us, without even pausing for us to say anything. She completely spiraled into anger about how low minimum wage is in the US and told us that our wedding wasn’t important because of the war in Ukraine. Luckily, we parted ways from Rachel following that outburst and ended up planning the most perfect wedding day on our own.If you are trying to plan a wedding in France, steer clear of Rachel Kaplan.*edit- just remembered that she also made a homophobic comment on one of our Zoom calls about why she would never hire a gay male makeup artist. Another reason not to support this business!
