Arènes de Besançon

Vestiges d'un important amphithéâtre gallo-romain (capacité 24000 places) construit dans la seconde moitié du 1er siècle et dont l'empreinte reste bien visible sur le site. Au IV ième siècle Il sera assez rapidement désaffecté en tant qu'édifice de spectacles et servira de carrière de pierre au cours du moyen âge et lors de la fortification de la ville par Vauban. Situé rue d'Arènes quasi sur l'ancienne Porte d'Arènes et au delà.Le site est inscrit ou classé au titre des monuments historiques depuis 1927.Ce lieu un peu oublié est toujours fascinant, il a presque 2000 ans... Hélas il n'a pas eu la chance, comme celui de Nîmes, de parvenir intact jusqu'à nous.

Op de plaats van het huidige Besançon lag in de oudheid Vesontio Het amfitheater werd in de 1e eeuw gebouwd. Het amfitheater was 130 meter lang en 106 meter breed. De buitenmuur was 21 meter hoog. Het amfitheater bood plaats aan ongeveer 20.000 toeschouwers.Nadat het amfitheater in de middeleeuwen buiten gebruik raakte, verviel het tot een ruïne. Het amfitheater diende daarbij als steengroeve, waar men eenvoudig bouwmaterialen kon vinden. De stenen werden onder andere gebruikt bij de bouw van de kerk Sainte-Madeleine (12e eeuw), het hospitaal Saint-Jacques (12e eeuw) en voor de vestingwerken van de Citadel van Besançon.

Lots of negative reviews here. It seems as though people are thinking that the hedges where the marker on the map is placed is all that remains of this ancient amphitheatre; a boring, modern indication of where it used to lie...The truth is that the real landmark that is worth seeing is above the road to the immediate north-west of the marker; the crumbling stone walls and seating platforms that once looked over the amphitheatre floor. It's truly mesmerizing to stand among the ruins and let your imagination run wild trying to visualize what this place may have looked like in it's prime.The reason I give this four stars is that the city of Besançon or Franche-Comté itself seems to have completely forgotten about these ruins and are clearly not making any effort to preserve them at all. It's really unfortunate but this is the story for a lot of ancient ruins in this area. Some are nicely protected and preserved while others are being completely reclaimed by nature; interesting in it's own way, but more of a shame than anything as there is an immense amount of history in this region, all of which is worthy of some kind of preservation.If you go to visit, refrain from walking on the walls as they're already crumbling after centuries of erosion and use and don't need any help being reduced to dust. Have a seat and imagine what it must have been like to sit in this place when it was in it's prime. It's awe-inspiring.

Vauban en a trop pris on ne peut même pas rêver de gladiateurs

Très inutile,un reste de vieux mur ne mérite aucune visite il serait bon de retirer cette indication sur les dépliants touristique de Besançon.

C'est complètement nul. Sauf si vous aimez visiter des parkings
