The two-time king of Poland, Stanisław Leszczyński, after being exiled, became the Duke of Lorraine and the son-in-law of the King of France. The inhabitants of Nancy remember the benevolent king from Poland, a connoisseur of art, a philosopher and builder, as well as an amateur of good cuisine.Lorraine was then an independent duchy, but as a result of political succession agreements, it was given to Stanisław Leszczyński for life. The Polish king in Lorraine had no formal power, but thanks to the considerable salary he received from Louis XV, he was finally able to show his true talent: a patron of art and culture.As an amateur of fine arts and a great builder, Leszczyński wanted to give Nancy the prestige character of the capital by engaging numerous artists and architects. During his time, Nancy was enriched with new churches, public buildings, parks and fountains, numerous triumphal arches. The most famous work, is the public space where the statue is standing.
