V.C. Corner Australian Cemetery

Lovely cemetery with no known graves at all. Astonishing to see that the 60th Batallion was destroyed in the Fromelles battle.

One of only 2 all Australian Cemeteries on the Western Front. No head stones to mark graves . A short drive from Fromelles. Short walk to the Cobber statue.

V.C. Corner Australian Cemetery
V.C. Corner Cemetery is a very interesting Commonwealth war cemetery in that there is not one single headstone. The cemetery is the final resting place of 410 Australians who died during the battle of Fromelles in 1916. But, when they were interred here after the Armistice, none of them could be identified. Consequently, the decision was taken to create a memorial wall for all 1,300 Australian soldiers listed as missing after the battle.Since then the graves of about 200 men have since been identified (many of them now lie at the new Pheasant Wood cemetery, only a few kilometres away. There are several other interesting WW1 monuments and cemeteries in walking distance or a short car drive. These include the 'Cobber' memorial and Le Trou Aid Post Cemetery.
