Monday, July 17, 2017My first visit to Reims, France & to a Mephisto Outlet. My boyfriend read that Rick Steves, Travel guru, loves this brand. We had 3 crazy hard 10 hour days of straight walking/ jogging/ dodging bikers & all sorts of vehicles on Amsterdam's uneven cobblestone streets. We wore our shoes that we had diligently selected months in advance just for this trip. We are hikers from Colorado & are used to trekking in all sorts of taxing conditions. Some how, the shoes we selected didn't hold up as well as we had expected. By day 3 of trains, planes & dodging automobiles, our dogs were barking. Both my large toes were ouchy. My boyfriend's one pinkie toe was developing a hot spot. I had used a hiker's lotion each am to reduce friction. He had not. I doctored him up w argan oil over night to heal the area. I lubricated his feet in the am too. His toe area healed overnight. Now a week later in Reims, his toe is still being squished against the side of his Sketchers Memory Foam shoes, which were super comfy for months before the trip.We decided to give the Mephisto Outlet a try. It was closed on Sunday, like most shops, so we browsed windows. Monday, stores open at various times. The window display of the Mephisto Shop was lovely & looked like a normal shop. Inside it looked like a shoe sale, with everything spread out on tables. It was set up self serve style. Find the shoe you want in your size, then ask the one sales woman for the other shoe in the pair. Some women's & men's shoes were mixed together & styles were not grouped in similar categories. Sizes were all mixed up too. If you knew what you wanted & picked up a shoe & asked for your size, you were told to look for it yourself. There was a particular shoe I loved & I looked for my size, but was unable to find it. I could definitely have missed it because it could get lost amongst all the other shoes & some were very similar in color & style. The one I was looking for was a light color, nonflashy women's city sneaker. I asked the saleswoman for assistance finding my size 8 1/2 or 9 US. My boyfriend is fluent in French & asked her as well. She said if I couldn't find it, it wasn't there. Now I know these are reduced prices, but 110 Euros for a pair of tennis shoes is still not cheap. So, if you are not in a hurry & want a good deal on a quality shoe, stop on in & pray for luck. You could always pray at a cathedral first, lol. Bring your own socks or stockings. They do sell additional Mephisto inserts. It is a nice air conditioned shop. They have one round couch to sit & try on shoes. You get to put the ones up that don't work for you. So, you are working for your discount. I was there at least 30 mins working nonstop & trying on around 10 shoes before I hit the jackpot. Got my very comfy & stylish city sneakers for 110 Euros. I will look them up on line later to see what this particular pair is going for. I know their sneakers go for $150 - $300. Trying them on in a shop is way better than buying on line. Their sizes vary from style to style. My left foot is a US 9 narrow, my right foot is a 8 1/2 narrow. I wear 9 narrow running shoes. I tried on sizes US 8 - 9 1/2 in lace up styles. The fit was all over the place. I ended up getting a lace up pair of US 8 1/2 normal width. My boyfriend didn't score at all. Any shoe that was long enough for his size 11 feet, were too wide. He seemed to have a very popular shoe size & could not find his size in what he wanted. Some of the leather sandals in his size were too tight. So, definitely try on any shoe you plan to buy. Also, some shoes will look much better if you change the laces after you buy them. From other reviews I saw a concern about being made in China. There is no mention of that on the box or shoe. The shoe I purchased is an All Rounder." In the lid of the box
